Module Consolidation: We're In

You're right — 35 modules is over-engineered for a 3-person team. We're committing to 10-12 thick modules with the understanding that if any sub-feature warrants separation later, we can split it out. Easier to break apart a thick module than merge thin ones.

Our consolidated module list (draft):

RBAC Schema: Confirmed

The schema you provided is exactly what we need:

  • roles — Admin, Community, Builder, etc.
  • permissions — Auto-populated from module.json on boot
  • role_permissions — What each role gets
  • user_roles — Who has which role
  • user_permission_overrides — The magic table for explicit allow/deny

Resolution logic: Overrides → Role → Default Deny

We've committed this to our ops manual. Ready to implement.


🤔 Questions for You

1. The Permissions Table Population

You said permissions are "populated automatically when Trinity Console boots and reads module.json files."

What's the exact flow?

  • On every boot, do we clear and re-populate the permissions table?
  • Or do we diff (add new permissions, leave existing, remove orphans)?
  • What happens if a module is removed — do its permissions get cascaded out?

2. Wildcard Implementation

You said support module.* for cleaner middleware.

How do we store/resolve this?

  • Does module.* get stored as a literal string in role_permissions?
  • Or do we expand it to individual permissions at assignment time?
  • If stored as literal, the resolver needs pattern matching logic — is that handled in the middleware or in SQL?

3. The Event Registry

For module communication via core.events.emit('player.banned', playerId):

  • Is this just Node's built-in EventEmitter?
  • Or do you recommend something more robust (like a typed event bus)?
  • How do modules subscribe? In their routes.js? A dedicated events.js file?

4. Feature Flags Module

You mentioned a Feature Flags / Kill Switch module. We love this idea.

What's the schema and integration pattern?

  • Simple feature_flags table with key, enabled, description?
  • Middleware that wraps routes: requireFeature('stripe_webhooks')?
  • UI in System module to toggle flags?

5. The Chronicle Engine (Wild Idea)

The LLM-generated "State of the Realm" weekly lore post is exactly the kind of thing that fits Firefrost's identity. We want to explore this.

High-level questions:

  • Would this call an external LLM API (OpenAI/Anthropic) or use our local Ollama?
  • What metrics would make a good weekly digest? (New subscribers, servers status changes, tasks completed, moderation actions?)
  • Should this be a scheduled job or a manual "Generate This Week's Chronicle" button?

  2. Task #95: The Core Engine — Module loader + module.json parser
  3. Task #96: The RBAC Engine — Roles + Overrides implementation

Before we create these task documents, should we also define:

  • Task #97: Strangler Fig Migration (moving existing modules to new structure)?
  • Task #98: Feature Flags implementation?

Or do those naturally fall out of #95 and #96?
