### The Story:

**Adopted:** November 25, 2015 (day before Thanksgiving)
**Birthday:** September 30, 2015
**Origin:** Runt of the litter, Corning, NY

**The Name Saga:**
- Original: Butternut ("Bubs") - color of butternut squash
- Donna's Restaurant (Michael's mom): Famous "Nutter Butter Peanut Butter Chocolate Ribbon Pie" — Donna Robbins' own creation, served at her restaurant in Corning, NY since 1985. Nutter Butter cookie crust, layers of peanut butter and chocolate, whipped cream. A children's book was written about it.
- Nutters No Butter: Squirrel who hated butter
- **Official name: BUTTER NO NUTTERS** (reverse of squirrel's name)
- **Legacy thread:** Donna builds with food → Michael builds with servers → Butter carries both legacies in his name. Three generations. (See: `docs/relationship/origin-story.md`)

**The Staircase Ritual:**
- Every morning: Followed Michael down stairs, wanted to go to work
- Michael threw ball UP stairs to distract him
- Every evening: All balls at BOTTOM of stairs (Butter brought them down, waiting)

**The Gladys Era (Aug 2015 - Nov 2016):**
- Bonded with Michael's girlfriend Gladys
- Breakup November 2016
- **Never liked another woman after** (until Meg)

**The Migration (2020):**
- New York → Minnesota to be with Meg
- 16 hours of howling in car
- Hates vehicles (still does)
- Moved into MEG'S house, but Butter felt SHE was intruder

**The War (2020-2024):**
- 4 years of ankle warfare
- Swiped at Meg EVERY TIME she walked by
- Meg never gave up

**Origin:** Louisiana boar herding (ACTUAL working dog)  
**Mystery Gap:** Ended up in New Mexico shelter (how?)  
**Nearly a year in shelter**  
**Adopted 2020:** First pet Michael & Meg adopted together  
**The derpy picture that captured hearts**

**Personality:**
- Relaxed... until leaf falls (FULL ALERT)
- Loves car rides... gets anxiety in vehicles (abandonment fear)
- Working dog breed... doesn't know how to "dog" (no fetch, no play)
- Louisiana born... hates cold (moved to Minnesota!)
- Herding instinct: Tries to herd dogs at park back to water bowls

**Adopted early 2021, ~4 months old**  
**Returned to shelter after 4-5 days:** Previous owner said "too difficult to train"  
**The Meeting:** Meg sat on floor, let her come, Jasmine climbed into Meg's lap (10-15 lbs then)  
**Purpose:** Oscar bonded with Michael, needed dog for Meg  
**Name:** Meg chose "Jasmine" as contrast to her breed/size (gentle name for gentle giant)

**Current:** ~100 lbs, "brick house" build, Doberman structure + Shepherd coloring

### The Story:

**Adopted May 2021, ~1 year old**  
**Origin:** Partially feral, living on streets of Coon Rapids, MN  
**Shelter:** Same one as Oscar  
**Meg's Choice:** Channeling Wiccan energy, "OMG a black cat!"  
**Name:** Midnight Noir (blacker than black, except 3-4 white chest hairs)

**The Cabin Incident (July 2021):**
- Got out, went under cabin (had flooded previous year)
- Cold, nasty water
- **MEG PUT ON SWIMMING SUIT AND WENT IN TO RESCUE HIM**
- **After that: He accepted them**
- From toleration → acceptance → full-blown cuddle bug

**Transformation:**
- Before: Feral, suspicious, don't pick up (still can't)
- After: Pushy for skritches (sometimes annoying), comes when called, greets at door

**"More Dog Than Cat":**
- IMMEDIATELY responds to name (not typical cat!)
- Always greets at door (for skritches, but still!)
- Laser OBSESSED (truly believes he'll catch it someday)

**The Flash Mode:**
- Doesn't WALK, RUNS everywhere
- Full-speed route: One end → stairs → attic → across → back down
- Repeats 2-3 times
- No reason

- Tries to take down Butter (17 lbs)
- Loses constantly

**Adopted July 6, 2022, 8 months old**  
**Origin:** Minneapolis Animal Shelter (overpopulated, animals >6 months = FREE)  
**Why Husky:** Michael always wanted one (best friend "K-9 Dave" raised them)

**Medical Role (PRIVATE CONTEXT):**
- Diabetic alert dog (NOT formally trained, just KNOWS)
- Gets antsy when blood sugar out of range
- **The Breath Check:** When Michael away >2 hours, must smell breath when returns
- Michael thinks it's blood sugar check
- **Never mention publicly**

**Training:**
- Best trained dog (for the most part!)
- Plays ball, shake paws, high-fives
